Junior Tournament report

James Mayne, who plays for Helmsley C in RTTL division 3 had a great tournament, winning both the under-11 and under-14 competitions. Edward Fambely won the under-18s final.

Report from Gerald Cosens:

Five events were contested including the ever popular generation doubles.  Fifteen juniors from Gillamoor Club entered the tournament looked smart in their new shirts with logos.

The day started with a competition for aged 18’s and under.  Number one seed and county player Edward Fambely making short work of the opposition in the rounds and beating his club mate, Adam Ridley in the final in straight sets, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6.

Generation doubles proved to be the usual fun and competitive event.  Eight father and sons competed for the cup but were unable to prevent the holders and number one seeds, Edward and Peter Fambeley, from winning the trophy.   They beat the number two seeds, up and coming youngster Stephen Temple and his dad, Titch, in a very competitive match; 19-17, 11-4, 12-10.  It was good to see Paul Stansfield , John M cCourt, Howard M aine, Ian Stansfield, Pedro Garcia-Hall and Sean Leogue partnering and encouraging their sons. Edward and Peter were awarded the perpetual trophy for keeps as they have won it on four occasions.  Their names will be the first on the new cup as this year’s winners.

The 11 and under boys event was well contested with sixteen entries.  Four groups of four players, best of three games, battled it out to take their places in either the main event or the Plate with the top two in each group going through to compete for the title.  Honours were equally shared between the clubs in Ryedale.  James M aine from Helmsley Club took the title, beating Stephen Temple from Pickering Club 11-5, 11-9; and Harry Tate-Smith from M alton and Norton Group won the closely fought Plate title against Thomas Wood from Gillamoor Club; 6-11, 11-8, 12-10.

It was encouraging to see more girls entering the sport at such a young age.  Seven girls competed in two groups in the girls 11 and under event.  Lydia Bernstein showed a lot of promise beating her club mate Faye Nicholson 6-11, 11-7, 11-9.  Bethany Horton played her club mate Bethany Flinton.  She kept her cool and won the Plate event 11-9, 15-13.  The last event of the day; Boys 14 and under, was played in two groups.  Some exciting quality matches were played with James M aine, Boys 11 and under winner, competing against his Helmsley club mate Adam Ridley for the title.  The final was staged and the boys put on a good sporting show playing some exhibition shots.  James kept a cool head and took his second title of the day.  Tom Fussell played his schoolmate and last year’s Plate winner, Ryan Boyd, in the semifinals, winning 11-13, 13-11, 11-9, 12-10; taking him into the final against Joshua Garcia-Hall.  He took the title by beating Joshua 11-8, 11-9, 11-8.

Thanks were expressed: to M r. Chris Campbell for sponsoring the event and presenting the trophies; to Paul Tate-Smith, RPL Safety  Consultancy, Ralph Yates and Sons Ltd., M orrisons, BATA, Harrison and Hargreaves and Wallis Stationers for their generous support;  also to John Gascoyne , Chairman of the Ryedale Table Tennis League, for being referee, Ruth Purseglove from Helmsley Club, Graham Slater from Gillamoor Club, Paul and James Stansfield from M alton and Norton Table Tennis Group for their invaluable help.
