Ryedale Junior Closed Table Tennis Tournament 2006

  Saturday 11th March 2006

Report

The sixth Ryedale Junior Closed tournament took place on Saturday the 11th March.  Malton School hall was the new venue for this competition and what a cracking venue it was.  Under the management of organiser Gerald Cosens, assistant Paul Stansfield and referee Cliff Edens, the day went without a hitch. There were players from clubs all around Ryedale.

Gillamoor School table tennis Club arrived with a number of improving players and some great supporters.  Graham Slater and his team of helpers have done some excellent work developing the sport in a very rural area.   Hovingham Table Tennis Club was well represented in the Under 11 categories.  Stuart Ellis, Martin Potter and Matthew Dwyer coach and develop a very lively group of keen youngsters at the newest of Ryedale Clubs.  The main silverware however, went to the more established Clubs with Helmsley Table Tennis Club taking all of the main titles.

In the Under 18 main Event, Edward Fambely won a close final against Joel Wright from Malton and Norton Coaching Group to take the first of his three titles.  In the Consolation Plate, Malton student, David Chugg defeated Helmsley’s Luke Lunn in another display of controlled attacking.  The Under 14 boys event was won by Edward who beat his friend and playing partner, Charlie Allott.  The plate was won by Norton’s Ryan Boyd who beat newcomer to the sport, Jack Lambert, a Norton College student who plays at the Helmsley Club.

Lunchtime saw the Generation doubles take place and former winners, Edward and Peter Fambely met Brian and Alistair Quinn from Malton, in the final.  This was a very close match and could have gone either way but the experience of the Fambely’s showed as they took the title.  The Boys Under 11 event saw two Helmsley players progress through to the final.  A relative newcomer to the sport, James Mayne showed a calm manner against his class mate, Richard Addison who struggled with the consistency of James’ returns and James won comfortably.  In the plate, Toby Barran from Malton and Norton Coaching Group beat his fellow team mate, Dan Stansfield in a very sporting match.

The girls Under 14 event saw a newcomer to the sport, Sophie Feather from Gillamoor win some great matches to reach the final against Florrie Stockbridge from Helmsley.  In the final, both girls hit some amazing flat drives to win points outright.  However, the experience of Yorkshire Under 10 champion, Florrie, showed through as her gritty determination eased her through to the title.  The consolation plate introduced two relative beginners to the sport, Faye Nicholson from Gillamoor and Katie Howe from Helmsley.  Both girls played very well in their first Ryedale tournament but Faye, with her consistent backhand, won to take the Plate back to the M oors.

A great thanks goes to the sponsors, Campbell ’s of M alton, in particular, Chris Campbell who presented the Trophies to all finalists.
