2006 Ryedale League Closed Tournament  

Report

On Sunday the 12^th March, Malton school was the setting for the Ryedale Closed Table Tennis Tournament.  In these very hotly contested competitions, seeds tumbled, and new roots were grown at Malton school as the new venue for this event.  Under the brilliant organisational skills of Gerald Cosens and Paul Stansfield, the ‘historically long day’ was reduced by playing each event to the conclusion.  The morning session was for the Division 1 players.  Seeded at number 1, Tom Needham had a tough first round draw, playing Paul Swift in his group.  Paul came back from 2 games down to win 3-2 and looked in great form.  Tom still progressed but was later knocked out by fellow team mate, Cliff Edens who then lost to Swift in the quarter finals.

At the other end of the draw, number 2 seed, Brian Quinn , squeezed through his group as winner after a tremendous match against Paul Young.  At 10-10 in the fifth game, it could have gone either way but the experienced Quinn just nipped the game to progress though as group winner.  However, in the quarter final, he came up against Nathan Horsley.  The youngster played some brilliant attacking shots to drive the mighty Quinn away from the table and take the match 3-2.

The other two seeds, Charles Allenby and Ian Stansfield, both former winners, were slowly progressing through the rounds.  In the semi final, Allenby played Horsley and upped his gears to beat the youngster from York.  In the other semi, Stansfield played Swift.  This was an incredible match with both players on top form.  The irrepressible Stansfield using lightning footwork to get his big forehand in, only to fall shy of the finishing line as the more consistent Swift flew to his first Ryedale final. In the final, Allenby’s uncanny ability to find energy wooed the crowd but Paul Swift returned the Allenby drives over and over again to take the title of Division One Champion.

The Consolation Plate final was a really close match between Wendy Prest and Alec Hodgson.  Prest won this tentative affair showing great consistency.  The Division 2 title went with seeding and Gareth Bryning met Andy Grayson in a battle of the topspin defenders.  Bryning finished the match grinning as he took the title. The plate went to Alan Kirkwood with Katarina Heinrich the runner up.  John Stokes was the worthy winner of the Handicap Competition, beating Katarina Heinrich in the final. The doubles event saw a new name on the Trophy, in Andy Seed who partnered Ian Stansfield to beat Ray Mitchell and Steve Oldfield in an entertaining final.

The Mayor of Malton, players and former players came to present the Trophies throughout the day and the League thanks them for their time. They were Mick Burnett, Steve Miller, Ann Hopkinson ( Mayor) and John Gascoyne .  Thanks also goes to Gerald Cosens and Paul Stansfield for running the two days,  the Caretaker of Malton School, Ruth Purseglove and Jean Wardman for their help throughout the weekend.

• We regret that refreshments will not be available – please bring your own and put litter in the bags/bins provided.

• There will be no Selected Doubles event in this tournament.

• Tables for practice will be available in the gym near to the hall.

Rules

1.      Entries accepted only from Ryedale TT League registered players who have played at least three complete matches ( 9 games) by 25.02.06

2.  A separate entry form to be completed by each player.

3.  Entries received late or without correct fee/SAE will not be accepted.

4.  Players to register on the day at least 20 minutes before they are due to play.

5.  Players late for their scheduled matches will be scratched.

6.  All competitors to wear suitable non-white clothing and appropriate footwear.

7.  Practising to take place in the adjacent gym only: not in the competition area (hall)

8.  Players can enter more than one eligible event.

9.  Each event will be played continuously until its conclusion, when trophies will be awarded.

10. Players should not leave the venue whist in contention.

11. All events will be timed where possible. Players will not be called: it will be the player’s responsibility to be ready to play at the scheduled time.

12. All matches played best of 5 games, 11-up, except handicap (details overleaf).

13. Players will be required to umpire.

14. Divisional singles competitions to be played in groups of 3 or 4, depending upon entries. Each player guaranteed at least 3 games.

15. Winners and runners up of groups go through to main event, others into consolation event.

16. Doubles and Handicap events are straight knockout competitions.

17. All players agree to abide by ETTA and RTTL Tournament Rules. Decision of the Referee/Organiser shall be final.
